Yews Grown in Containers

(Question)

Hi, I live in downtown Toronto. I’m wondering if Hicks Yew can be grown and withstand winter in a free standing planter?
The location is a mix of sun and shade.

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners with your question concerning container gardening.

The increase in urban sprawl has lead to the increase in condo living and container gardening. The Toronto Master Gardeners have received numerous inquires with regards to growing evergreens in containers. The rule of thumb for winter hardiness in containers is that the plants you choose should be hardy to two zones lower than our own, which in Toronto would be Zone 4, or to be safer, Zone 3.
