Thank you for your question.

Landscape Ontario will provide you with local sources where you might purchase a Joanna Gilbert tree peony.  As Master Gardeners, we do not provide names of retailers.

Most varieties of tree peonies are hardy to Toronto.  They do best where they have a cold winter for dormancy, and hot summers. Often  labeled as full sun plants, tree peonies prefer some dappled to light shade, from the hot afternoon sun, so blooms do not fade too fast.

Fall is a good time to plant tree peonies and should be done at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes.

Slightly alkaline soil with good drainage is important.  Most soils can be improved by digging in organic matter, such as well-rotted manure or garden compost.

Tree peonies are best planted in a spot where they do not complete with roots from other trees & shrubs.
