Akebia quinata- Plant ID

(Question)

Attended the Through the Garden Gate in THE BEACHES.(Toronto) Took a picture of a vine growing on a trellis. Have not been able to identify it. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for contacting the Toronto Master Gardeners concerning your plant ID.

The photo appears to show the flower and fruit of chocolate vine, Akebia quinata. The vine produces glossy dark green leaves that are oval-shaped, and grow in clusters of five. Vines produce many dangling purple flowers with three petals in the spring (ranging from March to May) and may remain evergreen in the mildest areas or in a sheltered location..  It should be noted that this vine is quite aggressive and needs frequent pruning to keep it under control and is considered invasive in certain areas. See Chocolate Vine (Akebia quinata).
