Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners. A Himalayan birch or Betula utilis ‘var. jacquemontii’ is a rare and ornamental birch tree with smooth, white bark. It is somewhat susceptible to insect attacks,

The tree will grow to be about 30 feet tall with a spread of 25 feet. It has a life expectancy of sixty years. This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out.  The tree grows better in acidic soils. Their leaves may turn yellow in an alkaline soil.  Mulching around the root zone will protect the tree in exposed locations.  Do not plant these trees underneath power lines.

Toronto master gardeners do not recommend specific garden centres or nurseries. You may find Himalayan birches at a reputable garden centre in Toronto. If they don’t have them in stock they are often willing to order them for you.
