(Answer)

From your photograph, it looks as though there may have been damage to the trunk of your hydrangea tree.

Trees do not have a wound-healing process, per se, but because of their cellular structure, are able to “compartmentalize” injured tissues rather than to restore these tissues to a healthy condition. Essentially, this process allows trees to slow and contain the process of decay from injury or disease.

If you are able to set your tree upright, replant it, and apply additional support if needed, your tree may continue to develop and thrive.  Good maintenance in terms of mulching and irrigation will help to give your tree its best chance for survival.
